Vincent van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands on March 30, 1853. His father Theodorus van Gogh was a minister and his mother Anna Cornelia Carbentus was an artist. Due to financial struggles within the family, van Gogh had to quit school to work. He worked for his uncles art dealership and later, got transferred Groupil Gallery in London. There, he fell in love with Eugenie Loyer, who rejected van Gogh's marriage proposal. Van Gogh suffered emotionally from this. Even though he was born into a religious family, it was at this time that he really devoted his whole life to God. He studied hard for the entrance exam for admittance into the School of Theology in Amsterdam. But he was denied entrance and was not able to fulfill his dreams of becoming a minister. He was also turned away from the Church of Belgium. After much emotional suffering, van Gogh turned to art. Van Gogh lacked proper and professional training, but he was able to teach himself through various books. Van Gogh's younger brother Theo, who also was an art dealer, supported van Gogh financially. Van Gogh then fell in love with an alcoholic prostitute named Clasina Maria Hoornik, who became his companion. When Hoornik returned to prostitution, van Gogh moved back to the Netherlands.
Vincent van Gogh was inspired by Japanese art. He moved to Arles in the south of France because he had heard that the light in the village was like the ones of Japan. Since van Gogh was not able to take care of himself, Theo paid Paul Gauguin to look after him. Van Gogh and Gauguin got into a fight that ended with part of van Gogh's ear cut off, which he presented to a prostitute.
Van Gogh was extremely mentally ill. He suffered from epilepsy, psychotic attacks, and delusions. He was hospitalized repeatedly. Van Gogh decided to self-admit himself in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He did many of his butterflies and moth paintings there and also other great pieces, including the famous "Starry Night". His butterflies series consisted of what he saw in the gardens of the asylum.Van Gogh later moved to Auvers to live with Dr. Paul Gachet. On one of his usual mornings where he would go out and paint, he brought along with him a loaded gun. He was distraught due to the conversation he had with Theo about his finances. This caused him to shot himself in the chest but the bullet did not kill him. He was hospitalized and returned home. Vincent van Gogh died in Theo's arms on July 29, 1890 at the age of 37. Van Gogh's mother was able to live long enough to see her son praised as a great artist and genius. Vincent van Gogh is considered one of the greatest Dutch painters.
